Bathroom tips:7 tips for renovating a new bathroom

Looking for tips for your bathroom? Here you will find an overview of 7 useful tips for renovating, refurbishing, renovating and organizing your bathroom.

Renovate or renovate?

Do you have a bathroom that is not to your liking? Outdated or perhaps too small? Then you can choose to renovate or renovate the bathroom. It all depends on your wishes and of course your available budget. In general, a renovation is a lot cheaper than a complete bathroom renovation.

With a bathroom renovation you can think of replacing, for example, the sink, the tiles, bath or shower and the toilet. However, it is also possible that pipes need to be replaced. Then the renovation becomes a lot more expensive. Renovating a bathroom means replacing old materials with new ones. This adds a piece of value to a house or a dwelling.

During a renovation, part or all of the bathroom is demolished and replaced with new materials. A new layout is often also immediately made, for example because this is more logical or because more space is available. Think of installing a bath, a double sink or moving the toilet so that it is separate from the bathroom.

Bathroom tips:7 tips for renovating a new bathroom

Before you can start renovating the bathroom, it is good to have an overview of points that you should pay attention to. Think of the costs, the layout, bathroom decoration tips and much more. That's why I'm sharing seven bathroom remodeling tips with you.

1. Work out your bathroom plans on paper

Before you can start the renovation, you must first put everything on paper for yourself. In your head it may look very nice, but in real life it can be disappointing. Make a scale drawing of the available space. Also, make sure to scale everything you want in the bathroom. Think of a bath or shower tray, washbasin, toilet and, for example, an extra cupboard. Now you can decorate the bathroom by sliding everything back and forth.

When developing your plan, keep in mind that while the bathroom is a room where you need to relax, it must also be practical. Therefore, ensure sufficient freedom of movement. Take into account the rest of your housemates and their wishes and requirements.

You can also look at your wishes in terms of tiles, use of color and other elements that can ensure that you have a complete picture. Don't forget to include important accessories in your plan. These can also affect the use of the space. People often overlook things like a toilet roll holder, towel hooks, a radiator and spare roll holder. However, it is elements in the bathroom that take up space.

2. Calculating costs for the bathroom renovation

Once you know what you want, you can start calculating the costs. On average, a bathroom renovation costs 3,500 – 10,000 euros. An amount that you should definitely take into account. The costs depend on a number of things:

  • Pipework:does it need to be replaced or is it still usable
  • Which elements can you possibly reuse
  • What do you outsource and what things do you do yourself
  • Do you choose brands or are you satisfied with, for example, private labels
  • Is the bathroom only being renovated or do you increase/decrease the space
  • Do you choose the same layout or do you want a completely different design

These are all things you should look at carefully, because this can prevent you from unexpectedly (high) costs afterwards. It is definitely recommended to have a specialist look at it. They have an eye for (unexpected) work, can estimate the value of the materials and can explain to you whether the renovation is feasible as you have it in mind.

Keep in mind that it is much cheaper to stick to the same format. With a completely new design, the piping must be moved. Not only is this expensive, but in some cases it is not possible.

3. Bathroom renovation tips:outsourcing

Do you have enough budget and do you want to be sure that you have as little work as possible on it? Then outsource the renovation of your bathroom. You leave the work to specialists, you know what the costs are. You can also make concrete agreements about when to start and when your new bathroom will be delivered. Of course unexpected things can always happen, but in most cases outsourcing is the best way to renovate a bathroom.

4. Renovating your own bathroom tips

It is of course also possible to get started yourself. Depending on how handy you are, how much time you have available and what you want to have renovated in the bathroom. Do you want to (partly) renovate the bathroom yourself? Then take the tips below into account:

  • Change the current layout as little as possible, so that you don't have to move/renew piping
  • Changing a toilet bowl is not too difficult and you can do it yourself
  • Changing tiles is a profession in its own right and you should really be able to do it. Alternatively, you could paint the tiles. Optionally, you can paste new tiles over the tiles
  • Demolition is often something that you can do yourself, even with a major renovation that you outsource. All you need is good tools
  • Sometimes small changes have a big impact:for example installing a new toilet bowl, adding other accessories (plants, a beautiful mirror, etc.) and painting the wall where there are no tiles

The most important tip, however, is:only do things that you are sure you can do. If you start with something and you don't manage to finish the work, you can end up paying more than if you had outsourced the work directly. Also take into account additional costs if, for example, you are going to demolish yourself. Then you will have to arrange a container, perhaps borrow tools and take a day off or sacrifice the weekend.

5. Small bathroom renovation tips

Maybe you have a small bathroom and you think remodeling it is a piece of cake. Unfortunately, this can be very disappointing in practice. The smaller the harder it can be. You have to use the space optimally, without losing sight of the safety and comfort for your family. When renovating a small bathroom, keep the following in mind:

  • Choose a suitable color that makes the bathroom appear lighter and larger (e.g. white)
  • Keep the use of extra accessories to a minimum (include this in your design as well)
  • Choose a plain design for your tiles
  • It is important to create extra storage space under the sink in a small bathroom, so that it is tidy (too many loose items only cause unrest)
  • Cleaning in a small bathroom becomes easier if you choose floating elements

6. Tips bathroom tiles

When renovating, you have the option of having new tiles installed. There are several options for this. If you choose to leave certain elements, you could paste new tiles on top of the existing layer of tiles. However, you will lose some space because of this, keep this in mind. It is better to replace the tiles or have them replaced.

Make sure you choose tiles that match the design and the desired look. Match the colors. Different tiles are available:wall and floor tiles. Many variations are possible in terms of quality, price, finish (matte or glossy) and material. That is certainly also a point of attention.

7. Bathroom styling tips

You may not think about it, but it is the accessories that complete the bathroom. A radiator in the bathroom is not only useful, but can also contribute to its overall design. This also applies to the choice of lighting. Provide light that not only illuminates the bathroom optimally, but also has a pleasant atmosphere. If you make up or want to shave in the bathroom, good lighting near the mirror is a must.

You can all coordinate the other accessories such as toilet roll holder, toilet brush, but also soap pump. A suitable shower curtain is indispensable for a shower. Do you need more inspiration? Then take a look around on Vtwonen.

Save for the renovation or take out a loan

It is of course possible that you do not currently have the necessary amount, while your bathroom is in dire need of replacement. For example, because you have just bought a new house. In that case, you can consider borrowing money. Inform well in advance about the various conditions, so that you do not pay too much interest unnecessarily. For example, choose a revolving credit to be flexible with regard to borrowing and repaying money.
