I've been dreaming of it for years, Scottish Highlander photo wallpaper on the wall. But in our old house there was no room for it. In addition, all the walls there were already equipped with spachtelputz… and well… you can't stick wallpaper on that. And it never occurred to me to plaster a house that is almost finished again, I wasn't very interested in that.
The moment we decided to move, my brain was working overtime, and it hasn't stopped to this day. Our house offers so many possibilities that I am overflowing with ideas. But the Scottish Highlander wall mural has never let go of me. And now it's finally here.

The first renovation is a kind of 'behind'. The space isn't quite finished yet, but my new office is really starting to look like something. Converted from an old barn into an office space of approximately 40 m². Absolutely great!
And even though my fantasies have previously thought that I would like a Scottish Highlander on the wall in the kitchen, the renovation is taking too long and I really didn't want to wait any longer. Luckily my new office also has a nice wall for photo wallpaper and this is where my Scottish Highlander comes into its own! I don't have to think about what color to put on the wall here 😉 .
I found the selection quite a challenge. I found the perfect Scottish Highlander for my project at Nikkel Art and with their tool I was able to calculate exactly how big I should have the wallpaper and how the highlander would then be distributed over the wall. My only challenge was the door in this wall. So I had to make a concession. Karel's horns - that's what our Highlander is called - they are not in full view. One of the horns still comes out next door, and the other horn rounds the corner. But I'm so happy with the result!
After selecting the print of the Scottish Highlander, I still had to decide which type of photo wallpaper I would like. And I'll tell you, I haven't touched a wallpaper in the last 25 years. Nice and handy to start with photo wallpaper right away 😉 .
The type of wallpaper that you can choose from at Nikkel Art is regular non-woven wallpaper, Eco premium non-woven wallpaper, Vinyl photo wallpaper and self-adhesive wallpaper. The latter sounds very appealing, but in retrospect I'm glad I didn't choose it. I had to get used to the wallpaper process again, and given the wide strips (with me they were 1.12 m wide) and the weight of the wallpaper it was quite a job. Imagine that your wallpaper already sticks in a certain place due to clumsiness.
My choice fell on Eco Premium. This photo wallpaper does not contain heavy metals and has good scratch resistance, which the Scottish Highlander can use in our household. Vinyl photo wallpaper is even better by the way, it is also tear-resistant and I think I would opt for that for next time. Just to be sure, it could take just a little bit more.
Frank was very much looking forward to this job. I also secretly a bit - afraid that I would screw up something - but of course I didn't show that. Finally last weekend the time had come and we hung the picture of the Scottish Highlander on our wall. Like I said, it was quite a job.
In principle it is doable but if I may give you one piece of advice; just start with a straight to wall. Without door 😉 . That's a lot easier, because cutting out the door was quite difficult here. This is also because the frame and the wall overlap. This means you don't have a clear edge to cut off.
In addition, it is important that you stick the photo wallpaper together so that you can stick the tracks of the Scottish Highlander well and exactly next to each other above and below. It is almost impossible to do this on your own, unless you are an accomplished wallpaperer.
I had the wallpaper paste delivered, which is handy. The Perfax Roll-on magic was delivered together with the photo wallpaper and so we could get started right away. You have to mix the powder with water and then you have to stir very well to get the lumps out. My wallpaper paste was not completely lump-free, but luckily you can also do something about it on the wall. The big advantage is that you smear the walls with wallpaper paste, instead of the wallpaper itself. I always thought that was such a hassle.
The paste is pink and once it dries it becomes transparent. That way you can at least see exactly where you've been with smearing. I prefer to apply a block brush to the wall. You can continue pasting the wallpaper completely according to the instructions that you receive. Super clear.
In the beginning I was quite nervous. Have I applied enough wallpaper paste? Is the first track right? How am I going to cut the photo wallpaper and does the Scottish Highlander really fit well in this area? As we were busy for longer, the nerves slowly disappeared.
However, I would like to give you a few tips if you get started with photo wallpaper yourself, whether you choose a Scottish Highlander or not.
All in all, we spent a few hours getting this photo wallpaper right on the wall. But I am completely happy with the result and would like to hang a wall again. That says enough right? You turn your wall into something special in one fell swoop and the room immediately gets a completely different look. I can therefore recommend it to everyone.
