As a parent of young kids, I've spent years dealing with dirty footprints on my car seat backs. Kids kick and scuff them constantly, especially on road trips or rainy days.
No need for pricey store-bought covers. I've created a simple, custom-fit homemade protector that's washable, affordable, and far more stylish than a towel. It slips right into the washing machine and holds up perfectly. Here's how I did it, based on real-world testing in my own vehicle.

Once car seats face forward, little feet rub relentlessly on the seat backs. For two years, I tried draping towels over them:

It worked okay at first, but my son would slip his feet underneath, causing them to fall. Since switching to my custom cover, we've had zero footprints. It's more secure, better-looking, and fully machine-washable.
Note: Seat sizes vary by car model, so measure yours first for a perfect fit.
1. Measure your seat back and cut the main fabric piece to fit. Mine measured 60cm high (including seams) by 46cm wide at the broadest point. Use a plate for rounded corners.

2. Cut the second fabric piece and two layers of cotton batting to match.

3. Cut two elastics: one for the headrest posts, one for the seat bottom. Lengths depend on your car. Also cut a pocket (seat width by 20cm high).

4. Hem the pocket top and bottom by 1cm. Pin and sew.

5. Pin pocket to front fabric. Sew bottom and two vertical lines to create compartments (see red lines in photo).

6. Layer: batting first, then back fabric (right side up), elastics in place, front fabric (pattern side down). Pin all around.

7. Sew around with 1cm seam allowance, leaving 15-20cm opening at bottom for turning. Trim excess at curves (avoid cutting seams).

8. Turn right-side out, press flat, and topstitch edges to close opening.

9. Loop elastics over headrest posts and seat bottom for a snug fit.

Your car seat backs are now protected! No more footprints, easy to clean, and hassle-free for family outings. Throw it in the wash as needed – no more nagging kids about their feet.
