What is salt?

Salt is actually a collective name for a number of things such as lime, gypsum, magnesium, ammonium salt, but also table salt is included. Table salt as we use it in the kitchen consists of the following components:sodium and chloride. In addition to giving food taste, salt is also used to extend the shelf life of food. It is precisely because of the sodium that a diet is prescribed in which the use of salt is limited or completely banned.

16 Things you can do with salt that you didn't know yet

Everyone has salt at home, if only to give food more taste. Fortunately, you can use salt for many more things. It is not only very useful, but also very low budget. How about freshening up the colors of your clothes or checking if your eggs are still good? All things you can do with salt.

1. Refreshing colors of clothes

Sometimes you have items of clothing that lose their color over time. You don't have to throw your clothes directly into the clothes bin. Salt is the solution. To refresh your colors, dip the garment in a solution of water and salt. Or just add ¼ cups to your washing machine. After washing you will be amazed at the results.

2. Refreshing and cleaning artificial flowers

Don't have green fingers and still want to enjoy some flowers at home? Then artificial flowers are the solution. Unfortunately, these are real dust nests. You don't need anything but salt to clean artificial flowers and plants quickly and easily. Sprinkle some salt in a bag, place the flowers in it and shake vigorously. The salt makes the flowers completely clean and free of dust.

3. Remove lipstick stains

If you like wearing a long-lasting lipstick, you probably know how hard it is to remove from glasses. If you have already tried everything, but the stains remain visible, use salt. Take a little salt between your fingers and rub it over the lipstick. Please note that salt can scratch your glasses, so rub carefully.

4. Cheap scrub for the skin

These tips are only suitable if you can use salt without any problems. You can easily make a scrub from salt. Wet your skin with lukewarm water and sprinkle it with salt. Make circular motions with the salt and rub it over your skin. Your skin is scrubbed and afterwards feels wonderfully soft.

5. Salt for clean and white teeth

Are you on vacation and find out that you forgot your toothpaste? Or have you run out of toothpaste at home? No worries. You can use salt as a replacement for toothpaste. You can also sprinkle salt on your regular toothpaste every now and then and then brush your teeth. By using salt (whether or not in combination with toothpaste) your teeth will become whiter and clean. However, don't do this too often. The structure of salt affects the enamel of your teeth.

6. Check if the eggs are still good

Eggs are typical products that you quickly forget. You get them in the store. Place them in the fridge and throw away the egg carton. The consequence? You have no idea how long the eggs could be kept again. Fortunately, you can easily test whether the eggs are still good or not. Put in a glass of water with added 2 teaspoons of salt. Gently slide the egg into this. Does your egg float? Then you can throw it in the GFT bin. Does your egg sink to the bottom? Enjoy your meal, your egg is still edible.

7. Treatment of dandruff

Do you suffer from dandruff? Have you tried anything and everything but without success? Then try it with a salt massage. To do this, take a little salt and massage your scalp with it before washing your hair. Do this for at least 5 minutes. It doesn't matter whether your head is slightly damp or dry. Then just wash your hair. The salt not only ensures a clean scalp, but also stimulates the growth of your hair.

8. Prevent frozen car windows

Now we haven't had a real winter for a while, but if it starts to freeze, you can apply the following trick. To prevent your car windows from freezing completely shut, take a piece of cotton (for example a piece of clothing) with which you rub all the windows of the car. Salt prevents water from freezing, so you won't be bothered by frozen windows.

Do you have a sore throat? There is no need to run straight to the drugstore, pharmacy or even the doctor. Salt is an inexpensive home remedy that instantly relieves a sore throat. 10. Remove water stains on furniture

If you have a large oak table like me, you will recognize the following problem. You are thirsty, put a glass of water on the table, but you completely forget that there is a coaster underneath. Before you know it you will have ugly circles in the table top. Fortunately, you can solve this quite easily by using salt. Immediately sprinkle a little salt on the stain and rub it in circular motions with a little sponge that is slightly damp.

11. Make wooden toothbrush last longer

My daughter has switched from an electric to a wooden toothbrush. Unfortunately, this has the disadvantage that the toothbrush can only be used to a limited extent. To extend the shelf life of the toothbrush, you can soak either just the toothbrush head or the entire toothbrush in a water/salt solution.

12. Full and soft lips

I already wrote it above:salt is the perfect scrub. You can use salt not only as a scrub for your body, but also for your lips. Apply a little salt to the toothbrush and make circular movements on your lips. When you're done rinse. You have fuller and softer lips!

14. Make the fishbowl shiny clean

Unfortunately, sometimes a fishbowl is dull and no longer to look at. Whatever you do will remain dull and hopeless. Do you want to give your goldfish a nice view again? Next time, clean the bowl with salt. Simply rub the inside of the bowl with salt (carefully!) and rinse well with water. Make sure that no salt is left behind, otherwise your fish will get a lesson in swimming upside down 😉

15. Unclog gutter

If you don't have a drain cleaner handy, you can try using salt. Sprinkle about half a cup of salt in the sink and wait about 20 – 30 minutes. Rinse with (preferably) boiling water and you will see that your gutter is unblocked again.

Some stains are difficult to remove, especially wine and grape juice stains. Salt also offers a solution here. Immediately after the accident, sprinkle salt on the stains and leave on for 10 – 15 minutes. Then you have to scrub the stain vigorously until the stain is no longer visible.
