Beanbag Chair vs. Traditional Chair: Optimizing Space in Our Spacious Living Room

As someone who values open space around me, our new home—with its 180 m² ground floor on a nearly 3000 m² plot—feels like a dream. No complaints here! Still, I’m always seeking smart spatial solutions indoors. Recently, adding an extra seat to the living room posed a fun challenge: chair or beanbag? Beanbag chair or pouf? So many options.

I thrive on change and decision-making, so let’s walk through my process and the living room updates that followed.

Beanbag, Chair, or Ottoman: The Perfect Living Room Addition?

Beyond our upcoming renovation, I’ve already reconfigured the living room for better flow. Entering from the hall, a wall with doors blocks the left side—it’s coming down soon. Behind it sits an industrial cabinet on one side and our piano on the other.

Post-renovation, the room will open up immediately upon entry. Staring at a tall industrial cabinet didn’t feel right spatially, so two weeks ago, we swapped positions: piano, moon painting, and cabinet flipped. Moving a piano is no small feat, but it paid off!

This tweak instantly enhances openness and light—you now see over the piano to the seating area. I love it. Yet, with the stove opposite, I wanted a cozy spot nearby for those fireside moments.

How Many Seats Does Your Seating Area Need?

Seating depends on family size. With our family of four, four comfy spots are ideal—whether sofa, beanbag, chair, or ottoman. Our living room’s elongated shape limits layouts: stove and TV are fixed, with windows front and side. The sofa fits only under the side window, leaving extra seats by the piano—while preserving that airy feel.

Why a Beanbag Outshines a Chair Here

A previous chair worked okay but obstructed views and required constant moving for TV time. Beanbags can lack style, edging into beanbag chair territory for chic options.

That changed with the B-Bag—a game-changer. Super comfortable and stylish, its cognac Old Aged Leather-look fabric pairs beautifully with my chunky knit pouf. It brings calm amid our color mix, and post-renovation (new ceiling and floor), it’ll shine even more.
