Swimming Pool Alarms: Legal Requirements, Types, and Expert Installation Guide

As a swimming pool owner, you're legally required to install a safety device on private in-ground pools. Above-ground pools are exempt if the ladder is removed. Safety options include barriers, alarms, covers, or shelters, chosen based on your pool's layout and budget. All devices must comply with standards and be lab-tested for reliability. A pool alarm is a smart, compliant choice.

Essential Swimming Pool Protection

French regulations mandate safety systems for private in-ground pools to prevent accidents. With years of experience advising pool owners, we emphasize selecting NF P90-307 certified devices proven in accredited labs.

Types of Pool Alarms

Pool alarms come in wired or wireless models. Wired versions require trenching during construction, making them less flexible. Wireless alarms dominate the market today—easy to install, remove, and equally effective.

Alarms vary by detection method:

  • The submerged alarm features a sensor box in the pool and a house-mounted control unit. It detects acoustic waves from a fall via its water probe.
  • The infrared or perimeter alarm uses terminals around the pool with infrared sensors creating an invisible barrier, alerting the indoor control unit if crossed.
  • The wristband alarm worn by children triggers the house unit on water contact, but it's not NF P90-307 approved and doesn't meet standards.

Step-by-Step Pool Alarm Installation

Installation varies by type but follows proven steps for safety and compliance:

  • Control unit setup: Mount indoors, connect to the electrical panel per manufacturer instructions, and secure to the wall at specified distances.
  • Detector placement: Position on or below pool coping. For submerged alarms, place the probe here too.
  • Perimeter post installation: Erect 4+ posts around the pool, 3m from the edge, no more than 18m apart. Connect with buried cable.
