Mardi Gras is just around the corner, and you're searching for a unique costume idea? A handmade mask stands out far more than store-bought ones—especially when it's budget-friendly and fun to create.
As a summer camp organizer with years of experience leading DIY workshops, I've seen firsthand how crafting masks sparks joy for kids and adults alike. Children adore the creativity, and it's a fantastic way to keep them engaged.
Here are three quick, simple mask ideas to inspire you and entertain the whole family.

Start with recycled cardboard scraps—think paper plates, cereal box panels, or any sturdy flat piece. I've used these countless times in camps with great results.
Draw a mask shape or animal face, inspired by online photos or templates. Cut it out, then customize with markers, stickers, feathers, sequins, fabric scraps, or colored paper. Glue on fun additions like an upside-down yogurt pot for a nose, a bottle cap, or a toilet paper roll—embracing the 'waste not, want not' ethos.
Punch holes on each side and attach elastic or ribbon to secure it around the head.

Repurpose old scarves or fabric scraps from your drawer—no need to ruin a favorite. Tie it around your head like a blindfold.
Pinch clips at eye level, remove the scarf, and cut holes there. For polish, sew around the edges with black thread for a dramatic eyeliner effect. Add feathers, beads, or shapes for personalization.

This one requires plaster strips (a worthwhile investment) and amazes kids every time. Enlist a helper, grab toilet paper rolls, water, and towels.
Layer wet toilet paper strips over the face (avoiding nostrils), then apply plaster strips, following facial contours. Leave nostril openings and smooth the surface.
Let it set for 10 minutes, gently remove, trim edges, remove inner paper, and dry fully (at least half a day).
Decorate with paint, collages, or anything imaginative the next day.
