As a home fragrance expert who's tested countless options, I'm not a fan of electric diffusers like Air Wick. They're loaded with synthetic chemicals.
Fortunately, you can create your own 100% natural reed diffuser that smells amazing and is simple to make.
Best part? It's ready in just 2 minutes and lasts for weeks! Here's how to make a reed diffuser at home. Watch:

- A diffuser bottle or small vase with a narrow neck
- Rattan reeds
- For the fragrance: Your favorite essential oils
- For the base: Sweet almond oil, safflower oil, or even vodka
1. Mix the liquids in a small bowl to create your scent blend. I love lavender and eucalyptus essential oils. For more ideas, check our fragrance guide.
- With carrier oil: 10% essential oil + 90% base oil.
- With vodka: 6 cl water + 12 drops essential oil, then a few drops vodka to emulsify.
2. Pour the mixture into your vase.

3. Insert the reeds into the vase.

4. Let the reeds soak for about 1 hour.
5. Flip the reeds so the saturated ends are up.

Your natural reed diffuser is ready! Easy, quick, and effective.
The scent lingers for weeks thanks to capillary diffusion through the rattan reeds—far better than pricey commercial options like Durance at 30€.
When the fragrance fades, just flip the reeds weekly.
Not sold yet? Consider these benefits from my years of use:
- Slow, continuous diffusion
- No aerosols or chemicals
- No flame, heat, or smoke—safer for homes
- No wax residue
- Zero energy use
- Narrow-neck vase: Slows evaporation. For ceramics, ensure it's glazed inside.
- Pre-mix scents: Experiment ahead, store blends in airtight jars for quick refills.
- Pets at home? Some essential oils can harm dogs or cats—research first.
- No rattan reeds? Bamboo skewers work; trim the points.
- Opt for rattan: Its porosity ensures even diffusion. Affordable online.
