Which plants are suitable for the bathroom

Plants in the house are back again. And not two large ones and a small one in the middle on each windowsill, but preferably a real jungle in the room. Did you know that plants are not only fun for the living room or bedroom, but are also a must in the bathroom? Which plants are suitable for the bathroom? I'll give you an overview including some tips which plants suit which style of bathroom.

Urban jungle trend

The urban jungle trend has been going on for a while and for now it doesn't seem to be coming to an end. With the urban jungle trend you get a lot of plants into your home and you use botanical prints. Many people only think of furnishing the bedroom and living room, while other rooms can also be furnished according to the urban jungle trend. You may not choose to have botanical prints in the bathroom, but plants can give your bathroom that little bit extra.

Why choose plants in the bathroom?

Plant lovers don't have to forego some greenery in the bathroom. On the contrary:plants in the bathroom increase the feeling of well-being and ensure a better climate. Many people assume that a bathroom is not suitable for plants, but the opposite is true. Plants do well in a bathroom, because the humidity there is generally a lot higher. The temperature in the bathroom is also often slightly higher than in other rooms, making it the perfect place for keeping tropical and more exotic plants.

Are plants suitable for every bathroom? Not quite. Plants need light to grow anyway. Bathrooms without windows or any form of light (preferably sunlight) are therefore not suitable for plants. In those cases you could possibly opt for an artificial plant to still be able to create a green oasis.

Align the choice of plant with the design of the bathroom

The choice of plants is large, which makes it very easy to match the plants to the design of the bathroom. Plants such as orchids come into their own in a sleek industrially designed bathroom. Precisely because they are more exclusive plants that are known for their exotic beauty and also flower for a long time, they underline the design perfectly.

In a predominantly white bathroom you can safely opt for larger, striking plants. These will then become the eye-catcher in your bathroom and provide a soothing and calm appearance. Do you have enough space? Then choose a banana plant or a beautiful full hanging plant, such as a large grass lily.

In this way it is possible not only to attune the design of the bathroom to the other appearance of the house, but also to choose plants that complete the picture.

Which plants are suitable for the bathroom?

As already indicated, it is mainly tropical and exotic plants that will do well in the bathroom. Below you will find plants that are suitable for the bathroom, depending on the amount of light and your own wishes and preferences.

Plants suitable for bathrooms with a lot of light

In bathrooms with a lot of light, you can choose not only green plants, but also plants that flower. The following plants are suitable for bathrooms with a lot of light:

  • Phalaenopsis orchids
  • Bromeliad
  • Caladium (Elephant Ear or Heart of Jesus)
  • Alocasia (skeleton plant)
  • Flowing Amabilis
  • Dieffenbachia (note:this is a poisonous plant!)
  • Dracaena
  • Ficus Binnendijkii 'Alii'
  • Cyperus (including umbrella plant)
  • Chamaedorea elegans (Dwarf Mexican Palm)
  • Nephrolepis exaltata (fern)
  • Calatea

  • Cordyline
  • Cocos nucifera (coconut)
  • Dracaena marginata
  • Codiaeum (croton)

Plants for bathrooms with limited light

Especially in the tropics there are plenty of plants that are happy with a place in the shade. So there are also various plants for bathrooms with less light. Here too you do not have to settle for only green leaves or small plants. There are plenty of plants with colored leaves, striking shapes and various sizes for these bathrooms:

  • Platycerium bifurcatum (staghorn fern)
  • Pellaea rotundifolia (Double fern)
  • Asplenium nidus (bird's nest fern)
  • Aglaonema crispum (very decorative leaves in different color shades)
  • Spathiphyllum

Caring for plants in the bathroom

Bathrooms are generally moist areas, so that the water needs of plants are adjusted accordingly. Plants already absorb moisture from the air, so they need to be watered much less. Because in many cases it concerns tropical plants, you have to take this into account when airing the bathroom. These plants should not be exposed to too much draft or to excessive temperature differences.

The plants may preferably be planted in hydrogranules rather than ordinary soil. The high humidity can cause the soil to mold more quickly. Finally, a small tip:plants react to substances in the air. Therefore, limit the use of deodorant, nail polish and other strong-smelling products in the bathroom to a minimum.

As you can see, there is a large choice in which plants are suitable for the bathroom. In addition, you can completely tailor the choice to the available space and the style of your bathroom. Ideal for creating an oasis of peace where you can fully relax after a hard day's work.
