Taming Our Massive 12x6m Home Shed: From Post-Move Chaos to Smart Organization

Ever since our move, visitors to our new home can't help but exclaim, "Wow, that's a huge shed—what do you use all that space for?" As seasoned homeowners who've navigated multiple relocations, I'll be upfront: at first, we had no clear plan.

For now, our 12x6-meter shed is a lifesaver for storing everything under the sun. Even in our larger new home, it felt essential for the move—without it, we'd have struggled to transport it all! The hasty relocation left things disorganized, but its generous size accommodates plenty.

The shed at our new house... crammed with everything

Curious what's inside our shed? Here's a rundown from our real-life setup:

  • The jacuzzi spent time here on its side but is now properly installed outdoors.
  • Our Harley motorcycles—finally a dry, dedicated spot that keeps them out of the way, a vast improvement from our old home when I first got my license.
  • Our custom-built cupboard, featured in this article, awaits installation; originally for the old house, now adapted for the new one.
  • The trailer sits center stage—Frank insisted on one upon buying the house, and a quick Marktplaats find filled more space.
  • Outdoor BBQ, multiple bicycles.
  • Cupboards, boxes, old bathroom fixtures, tools, veranda planks, outdoor fireplace, table tennis table, and more.
  • It's even fuller now; my brother stores 40 boxes of light stock (two full pallets) here since his home is maxed out—I should charge rent!
  • Plus a pallet of salt bags for our iron removal system.

The big disadvantage of such an overcrowded shed at home

Everyone sees the appeal: ample storage right at home. But for two self-admitted packrats—one hoarding 'potential' home treasures, the other clinging to 25-year-old textbooks—it's a double-edged sword. It enables endless accumulation!

Take our bikes: six in total (including an e-bike) for a household of four.

How are we going to organize this shed?

Order must prevail over chaos. Some items are destined for the house, but a smart system is key for tidiness. We'd love a workbench for Frank's DIY projects, and safe access to the back without hazards.

Past garden racks were useful but immovable. For flexibility, we've built custom shelving from scaffolding tubes and planks on heavy-duty wheels—easy to reposition as needs evolve.

Structure and just start then

The root issue? Multitasking renovations—office flooring, hallway updates, bathroom concepts—while unpacked boxes linger. Decluttering is ideal but tough for sentimentalists and design enthusiasts.

The path to the future

Exciting plans ahead: With a large attached roof, we're transforming part of the shed into an indoor bar. We'll open a 4-meter wall section, extending 2 meters out for a bar and outdoor kitchen. We'll lose shed space but gain 8 square meters under roof. Vision set—execution next!
