Transforming Dated Windowsills with Concrete Cire: My Hands-On DIY Experience

Ever since moving into our home, I've disliked the beige-speckled natural stone windowsills that clashed with our interior. After years of delay, I finally applied concrete cire and couldn't be happier with the sleek, modern result. In this guide, I share my real-world experience applying concrete cire to windowsills, complete with step-by-step instructions and lessons learned.

Restore Windowsills: Apply Concrete Cire Yourself

I was thrilled yet nervous to tackle concrete cire for the first time. Initially, I considered using it on a bathroom floor, but Patrick from Smartdeco advised starting smaller. That's when I decided on the windowsills I'd long wanted to update. (See the original look in my monkey lamp blog.)

Once materials arrived, I procrastinated for two weeks due to nerves. In hindsight, the process starts tricky but yields stunning results worth every effort. As a first-timer, plan for several days, accounting for drying times between steps—not full days of work, but patience is key. Our living room became a temporary workshop for a week, with kids warned to steer clear.

Applying Concrete Cire to Windowsills

The full process takes days due to drying intervals. Here's the sequence I followed meticulously with the provided manual:

  1. Apply primer to the surface.
  2. Apply first layer of concrete cire.
  3. Sand.
  4. Apply second layer of concrete cire.
  5. Sand.
  6. Apply Colorfresh for color enhancement.
  7. Apply first layer of PU sealer.
  8. Apply second layer of PU sealer.

Prep thoroughly: Tape window frames and cover floors. Mix only what you need fresh each time, as concrete cire must be used immediately. Pre-mix your color into the powder bucket and portion it out. For best results, mix just until combined—overmixing introduces air bubbles.

Pro tip: Use a square container for easier troweling. Need supplies? Get the concrete cire here.

Step 1: Apply Primer to Your Windowsill

Simple: Brush it on and let dry.

Step 2: Apply First Layer of Concrete Cire on the Windowsill

The most exciting step for a newbie like me. I cleared the room and took my time on the first sill, sweating over smoothness. Use a flexible trowel and damp sponge sparingly for texture. Corners are challenging—skip drum tools if they don't suit you; fingers work fine. Remove tape before full drying. Result? Impressively smooth already.

Step 3: Sand the Concrete Cire

Electric sander with 80-grit excels, but hand-sand corners to avoid thinning. The transformation post-sanding is remarkable.

Steps 4 and 5

Repeat Steps 2 and 3. Retape as needed.

Step 6

Tempting to stop here—the look is fantastic—but layers alone aren't durable. Apply Colorfresh with a cloth for subtle depth.

Steps 7 and 8

Tape frames again. Mix two-part PU precisely (at least 2 minutes). Roll thinly and evenly—avoid excess to prevent whitening or rolling issues. It dries fast, so batch carefully. Any initial white haze clears.
