Transform your living room or bedroom with a stunning wooden slatted wall. If pre-made panels feel overpriced, create your own like Nicole van Wijk and her husband did. The result? A sleek, professional finish that elevates any space.

I've personally experimented with wooden slatted walls, like in our kitchen project where I installed oak slats against cabinets. The outcome still brings a smile years later. That's why Nicole's indoor wooden slatted wall caught my eye—I've bookmarked it for our upstairs guest rooms. These walls add timeless appeal, indoors or out.
Other projects take priority now, but refreshing the guest rooms with new wallpaper, flooring, and slatted walls is on my list. Add a sofa bed, and it'll feel like a boutique hotel. For now, here's how Nicole achieved this striking transformation.
Nicole's wall now features oak slats mounted on a black-painted MDF board, not directly on the plaster—smart move to protect the surface. Opt for pre-cut black MDF or paint it yourself and have it sized at the store.
They sourced two oak planks from Karwei (available at any hardware store): 2.50m long, 195mm wide, 19mm thick, about €30 each. Cut into 4.4cm-wide slats for a custom fit. No saw? Ask the store to rip them—ensures straight, precise edges better than many pre-made options.
Secure the MDF board with screws at four points. For black-painted boards, use black screws to blend seamlessly. Space slats 1.3mm apart (adjust to taste) on the MDF; the gaps reveal the black backing for that premium panel effect. Attach with construction adhesive or sealant.
Measure your wall width ahead: factor in slat count, width, and spacing to size the MDF perfectly.
A clever touch: position slats to overhang the MDF slightly, creating depth visible from the side—stunning in profile.
If you're handy, this project is straightforward—especially with store-cut slats. It's far more affordable than ready-made panels and delivers a high-end look.
Thanks, Nicole, for the inspiration. I'll apply this in our guest rooms and beyond—stay tuned for updates!
