Safeguarding Children and Pets: Essential Swimming Pool Safety Devices and Regulations

Domestic accidents, particularly drownings in backyard swimming pools, are on the rise. These tragedies are entirely preventable with proven safety measures, including compliant security devices. In France, pool owners are legally required to install at least one approved safety system meeting national standards.

Pool Alarms

Pool alarms offer the simplest installation and lowest cost. While they provide early warnings, full protection requires prompt adult intervention. Key types include perimeter alarms, which detect crossings around the pool by people or animals, and immersion alarms, which activate on water entry. All must comply with NF P 90-307 standards for design, installation, and use.

Pool Barriers

These protective barriers fully encircle the pool, often in removable designs, ensuring children access the water only with adult supervision. Meeting NF P 90-306 standards, they stand 1.10m high, positioned at least 1m from the edge, with tamper-resistant gates and hazard-free construction. They also prevent pets from accidentally falling in.

Pool Enclosures

Rigid enclosures installed over the pool block unsupervised access. Options include high enclosures for constant protection and free movement; mid-height for easy swimming without removal; and low covers that lift for use. Fixed, telescopic, liftable, or sliding models keep out debris, retain heat for cooler-weather swimming, and enhance aesthetics. Governed by NF P 90-309 standards.

Pool Covers

Covers like rolling shutters, curtains, or tarps span the pool's full length in various materials. They must adhere to NF P 90-308 standards.

Wearable immersion alerts, such as bracelets or necklaces, provide added vigilance. Enjoy your pool worry-free by protecting children and pets—consult certified specialists for installation.
