Poinsettia: Honoring Joel Poinsett on National Poinsettia Day

The poinsettia, known as the Christmas star, lights up homes each holiday season. Celebrated annually on December 12 as National Poinsettia Day, its vibrant star-shaped bracts, winter blooming cycle, and iconic red hue evoke festive cheer—reminiscent of Santa's suit or firefighters' calendars sold at this time.

Joel Poinsett

The poinsettia's botanical name is Euphorbia pulcherrima, meaning "very beautiful" in Latin, as it's part of the euphorbia family.

This beloved plant honors Joel Poinsett, U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, physician, and amateur botanist. In 1828, he introduced the wild Mexican species to the U.S. Poinsett passed away on December 12, 1851, prompting the U.S. Congress to designate that date as Poinsettia Day.

Its popularity has spread worldwide: Europe sells 100 million plants yearly, including 35 million in Germany, 25 million in Italy, and 4.5 million in France. While not yet peaking here, its appeal is growing—far beyond just shooting stars.

Poinsettia Care Tips

Euphorbia pulcherrima is a short-day perennial, naturally flowering in winter after 14 hours of complete darkness daily. Commercial growers manipulate light cycles for year-round availability. With proper care, you can encourage reblooming next season.

Beyond classic red, find varieties in orange, pink, yellow, cream, and white—perfect if bold hues aren't your style. Pot sizes range from mini 6 cm plants to lush 22 cm+ specimens at your local florist.

Decorate freely; poinsettias thrive throughout the home. Key guidelines: avoid overwatering (no standing water in saucers), maintain 15-20°C, and protect from cold drafts during ventilation.

Leaf drop? Likely overwatering—let soil dry out and prune lightly to revive.

Toxicity Warning

Caution: Like all euphorbias, its sap is toxic and irritating. Keep away from mouths, and if a stem breaks, dab the wound with cotton. Wash hands if sap contacts skin.

For holiday gifting, opt for timeless poinsettias—they're versatile and always appreciated. Scatter them room to room without regret!
