Does summer mean barbecues and grills for you too? With the season approaching, I'm already envisioning lively gatherings in my garden. After years of using the same trusty model, I've just ordered a new one to elevate my outdoor cooking.
With ample garden space, I debated between a fixed or portable barbecue. A fixed grill appealed to me—my neighbor built a stunning red-brick one by his terrace. It even inspired thoughts of adding a pizza oven, which thrilled my kids. But after researching regulations and town hall permits, I opted for portability this time.
Charcoal remains the top choice for enthusiasts craving that authentic smoky flavor on meats and veggies. These affordable models start under €50. However, lighting charcoal requires skill and patience—often 30 minutes for proper embers—plus longer cooking times and CO2 emissions contributing to the greenhouse effect.
That's why I'm switching to a butane or propane gas model. Instant ignition, rapid heat-up, adjustable flames, and even cooking make it ideal. Mine also features a warming shelf for dishes. (Haven't tested it in this weather yet, but research confirms the benefits.)
Electric grills suit apartment dwellers with their compact size. Vertical-grill options save space and are easy to handle—just clean the plates after each use to avoid grease buildup.
