How to choose colors for painting the walls of rooms

Once the house was habitable, we had to think about the decor and, to begin with, painting the walls...

See all the colors

Having found the wallpaper expensive and painful to do in my previous accommodations, for a moderately convincing result, this time we laid bare the partitions in order to repaint them as we wanted… And the choice was not easy .

To choose one or more colors for each room of the house, I was interested in the symbolism of colors around the warm, cold and neutral color categories. The "basic" colors that I have chosen are, for warm colors:red, orange, brown, for cold colors:green, blue, purple, and for neutrals:black, white, gray. These will not be the subject of my study, sorry;-).

Warm colors

These are energetic colors, which makes them unsuitable for the bedroom, especially red. This one on the other hand is recommended to open the appetite in an unconscious way! It is therefore perfect for the kitchen, but gives the impression of a tight space because it is an intense color:it is therefore better to make it appear in small touches or not to paint the whole room in red.

Orange is warm and friendly par excellence, it is a color that brings joy. Ideal therefore in living rooms, it can brighten up and light up the room, but, for the bedroom, it is advisable to rather make it appear with small touches too, or on textiles, for example a wall hanging.

Brown, finally, is synonymous with calm and warmth at the same time and gives an exotic side. It can be used throughout the house thanks to the variety of its shades:light brown, brown, chocolate... A chocolate living room enhanced with a few more cheerful touches is perfect for relaxation and gives an impression of comfort, with a side "zen".

Cold colors

Green is a color of balance because it refers to nature and the plant world. Perfect for the bedroom if it is a pastel shade, it is also for a child's room. Dark green tends to "shrink" the room, so select it carefully. Combined with pastel blue for a bedroom, red or brown for the rest of the house, it provides peace and concentration.

Blue is one of our favorite colors, but it can get cold fast. It has the power to enlarge rooms and goes very well with beige, chocolate, white to give it a little personality. It is a fresh color conducive to inspiration, which also goes with more toned colors such as yellow and orange.

Purple is the color of meditation... Personally, we made our bedroom plum, a very beautiful shade of purple. The violine is nice too, and can be used very well for decoration in small touches, for example for cushions or a headboard. I found that purple made the room look a little bigger, and it went well with pink (very girly…) and medium green.

Well, I hope this quick analysis has given you some ideas, do not hesitate to share them. And you, what color did you paint your kitchen, your bedroom, your dining room?
