Before diving into your room repaint, gather these professional-grade essentials: a paint tray, masking tape, drop cloths or tarps, newspaper or cardboard for floor protection, fine-grit sandpaper, detergent for cleaning, filler for repairs, acrylic undercoat, white spirit for cleanup, a quality roller, and brushes. With tools ready, select a high-quality paint to refresh your walls beautifully.
Drawing from years of hands-on painting projects, proper prep is key to pro results. Move furniture away from walls, remove artwork and wall hangings, and cover remaining items with tarps. Protect floors with cardboard, newspaper, or additional tarps. Thoroughly wash ceilings, walls, and doors with detergent, rinse well, and let everything dry completely. Fill cracks and holes with filler, then sand smooth using fine-grit sandpaper. For optimal adhesion—especially on bare or new walls—apply an acrylic or glycerophthalic undercoat and allow it to dry fully.
Tape off protected areas meticulously: window frames, door handles, cornices, switches, and outlets. Start with a brush to cut in edges around taped sections for crisp lines. Move to the ceiling: load your roller with paint, wring out excess, and work in ½-meter sections. Apply the first pass in the direction of the light source, followed by a perpendicular pass. Blend sections with light, paint-free roller strokes for a seamless finish. For walls, fill the tray halfway, dip the roller, and distribute evenly on the tray's ramp to remove drips. Paint in 50 cm sections: roll vertically first, then horizontally to blend marks. Complete all walls before assessing for a second coat. Finish by cleaning tools thoroughly with white spirit.
