Last year, our farm was overrun with flies. They buzzed around our animals, food, and even my baby, making daily life a constant struggle.
Commercial chemical sprays were the go-to fix, but I stopped using them. They're too harsh, especially during milking or handling livestock.

I've applied store-bought sprays to my horse before, and they ended up on my hands, clothes, and worse. After trying several homemade recipes with mixed results, I discovered this essential oil-based fly spray that truly delivers.
As a farmer with years of hands-on experience, this is the most effective natural equine fly repellent I've tested. Here's the recipe:
- 1 liter of apple cider vinegar (or white vinegar)
- 20 drops rosemary essential oil
- 20 drops basil essential oil
- 20 drops peppermint essential oil
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon dish soap
- 1 spray bottle

1. Pour all ingredients into the spray bottle.
2. Shake well to mix.
3. Spray on animals, around food areas, or clothing.
This spray repels flies quickly and effectively—no more swarms on animals, food, or outdoor tables.
I've used it successfully on my horse and cow, and it works well for similar livestock like donkeys. Apply primarily to animals (e.g., udders or withers), surroundings, or clothing (avoid direct skin contact for humans).
While it doesn't last as long as chemical options, reapplying 1-2 times daily keeps flies at bay. It repels rather than kills, based on my observations.
White vinegar is a budget-friendly substitute for apple cider vinegar.
