Need to refresh your down jacket? Here's my tested method for machine washing it without damaging the insulation.
Many assume down jackets can't handle the washing machine and fear ruining the feathers. But with the right approach, it's completely safe.
A Decathlon expert shared this reliable technique with me—it's effective, straightforward, and saves you dry cleaning costs.
Just use lukewarm water, mild detergent, and follow these precise steps. See how:
Contents 1. Place your down jacket in the washing machine drum.
2. Add the two tennis balls.
3. Select a wool or delicate cycle at 30°C with low spin.
4. Add detergent to the dispenser.
5. Run the cycle.
6. Lay the jacket flat and open on the drying rack for air circulation.
Your down jacket emerges clean and fluffy like new! Quick, effortless, and no dry cleaner needed.
Always check the care label first. Skip fabric softener—it's unnecessary. No tennis balls? Use towels instead.
This works for all down jackets: synthetic polyester or natural down, from brands like Jott, The North Face, Decathlon, Uniqlo, Zara, or Patagonia.
Post-wash, the down may clump—that's normal. The tennis balls help redistribute during the cycle.
As it dries, the insulation fluffs up naturally.
Two reliable methods:
Machine Drying:
Use a synthetic or low-heat cycle. Run one cycle, remove and shake to fluff. Repeat as needed until evenly distributed and dry.
Air Drying:
Lay flat on a drying rack with good airflow above and below. Shake and flip regularly. Dry outdoors in sun and breeze if possible. Never use a radiator!
For spot cleaning cuffs or small stains:
No full wash required. Mix lukewarm water with mild detergent. Gently rub the spot with a sponge. Rinse area and air dry, avoiding wetting the rest.
