Owning a swimming pool is a joy—provided you maintain crystal-clear, pure water. Skip expensive chemicals! As a longtime pool owner advised by certified specialists, I've relied on baking soda, a natural, cost-effective essential for optimal pool care. These 5 expert tips will save you time and money.

When warmer weather arrives, algae can quickly invade, encrusting the bottom and walls with green deposits. Baking soda, 100% natural unlike chlorine, is your solution. For 30 m³ of water, disperse 1 kg (35 g per m³) evenly across the pool. Let it act overnight—no swimming! The next day, vacuum with a robot or scrub with a broom, then backwash. Opt for coarse-grained baking soda for faster settling and gentle dissolving.
Managing TAC—the measure of bicarbonates, carbonates, and hydroxides—can be tricky, but it's crucial for pH stability. Low TAC leads to fluctuations from rain, swimmers, or treatments. Raise it affordably with baking soda: add 16.3 g per m³ to increase by 1 point (10 ppm). For a 40 m³ pool raising TAC from 8 to 13 (5 points): 5 × 40 × 16.3 = 3,260 g or 3.3 kg. Ideal TAC is 15 points (150 ppm). Use fine or extra-fine grains for quick dissolution. Note: TAC differs from TH (hardness, calcium/magnesium salts, in °f). Hard water (>40°f) may need softening or rainwater dilution. Always test pH and TAC.

Don't toss used filters—regenerate them with baking soda to remove organic buildup. Mix 1 tablespoon per liter of warm water, soak the filter for 8 hours, rinse thoroughly, and reinstall. It's like new, saving you replacement costs.
Green water stems from low pH (raise TAC to 80-150 ppm) or bromine issues. Dissolve a few hundred grams to kilos (scale to pool size) in water and add—watch the clarity return instantly, no vacuuming needed. Test first; algaecide may help persistent cases. Green algae are harmless, unlike darker varieties. Soda crystals work as an alternative.
For pools under 3 m³, add 500 g to 1 kg per m³ at fill-up for instant pH and TAC stability. Safe for kids—concentrations are far lower than in Vichy water.
