Renovating Our Open Staircase: PVC Cladding, Wardrobe Conversion, or Sanding to White Oak?

No sooner had we wrapped up our latest home project than new ideas started brewing—this time for our hallway stairs. Our open staircase needs a refresh, but the best approach isn't clear yet. Options include covering it with durable PVC, enclosing it to create built-in storage, or sanding it down in hopes of revealing a beautiful white oak finish. I'm researching all angles, not just for inspiration but to nail down a realistic budget.

Renovating our open staircase: PVC cladding or something else?

If budget weren't a factor, I'd enclose the staircase completely. Our current dark-stained classic oak steps are sturdy, but the outdated railing drags it down. The open space underneath currently holds a basic container cabinet, but I'd love to transform it into a custom wardrobe with pull-out sections for coats, drawers for scarves, gloves, and even our motorcycle helmets—everything neatly hidden away.

We could then clad the stairs in PVC, matching the flooring we've successfully installed in our living room, kitchen, utility room, and hall. As homeowners who've done multiple DIY flooring projects, we're thrilled with our Ambiant vtwonen collection PVC floor. It's held up beautifully for months now.

Why PVC works so well

Life in our busy home means plenty of sand tracked in by kids' shoes, the dog's paws, and our three cats. Despite the mess, this PVC floor hides dirt remarkably well—no visible wear, even with chairs scraping across sandy surfaces at the dining table. As experienced DIY installers, we trust its superior quality and durability.

Cleaning is effortless: vacuum, mop stubborn spots, and done. This makes PVC ideal for stairs too. Our existing dark-stained stairs with that dingy black half-moon carpet show every speck of dust and crumb. A renovation is overdue!

Covering stairs with PVC: DIY or professional?

Ambiant, our go-to for PVC flooring, also specializes in staircase renovations. We could extend our hall floor right onto the stairs for a seamless look. While we handled the floor DIY, stairs—with their angles and edges—are best left to pros in my experience.

They can complete a PVC cladding job in just one day. Their website calculator lets you estimate costs and preview designs, much like the room planner we used for our floor. It gives a clear picture of the end result.

We're not decided yet, but post-summer, we'll tackle the hall. Stay tuned for updates!
