Energy-Saving Upgrades We're Implementing in Our New Home

As a family committed to sustainability, saving energy has long been a priority. Engaging the kids makes it a challenge, but in our new home, it's essential—the previous owners' bills were shockingly high.

Energy Consumption in Our New Home: Time to Cut Costs!

Here's the stark reality from the previous residents' usage: 4,378 m³ of gas and 7,820 kWh of electricity annually in 2020. That's unsustainable for us, so reducing consumption is our top priority.

What Does an Average Household Use?

For a family of four, typical annual usage is around 4,500 kWh of electricity and 1,700 m³ of gas—far below what we inherited.

Our goals are twofold: slash the previous €358 monthly advance payment and protect the environment through mindful habits.

Our Energy-Saving Plan

We're starting with insulation upgrades. We installed oversized solar panels in June, which offsets costs but doesn't reduce usage alone.

1. Essential Home Upgrades

Key decisions include:

  • Cavity wall insulation
  • Double glazing

These basics are absent here, and while upfront costs are steep, we anticipate €100–€125 monthly savings. We also switch energy providers yearly—my partner Frank ensures we always get the best rates.

2. Cozy Blankets on the Couch

A fun, family-friendly hack: blankets over us while lounging lowers the thermostat by a degree. The kids fight over our favorite Corensy throws—no nagging required!

3. Solar Thermal Collectors for Hot Water

Beyond PV panels, solar collectors heat water directly for showers. I've requested quotes from providers; they're common locally and viable for most homes.

4. Ditching the Waterbed and Home Tap

High-energy culprits like waterbeds (1,200 kWh/year) and always-on home taps (up to 500 kWh/year) are out—they make luxuries too costly.

5. Line-Drying Laundry Outdoors

Air-drying saves money, dries faster, and leaves clothes fresher-smelling. Our home's discreet lines make it effortless.

6. Turning Off Air Conditioning Strategically

Last summer's units help nighttime sleep, but daytime use spikes bills. Switching off saves ~€3 per 24 hours—a lesson learned the hard way.

To target savings, review this annual kWh consumption table for common devices. Switch to LEDs over incandescents and shop providers wisely.
