Tips for enjoying the outdoors in Scandinavian style

There is nothing quite as simple and yet as enjoyable as spending time in the fresh air. From enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of a walk to immersing ourselves in the wonders of the canals and greenery of nature, the great outdoors can be the solution to a myriad of problems. There are several ways to spend more time outdoors. So as the lockdown continues to lift, we offer some tips for enjoying the outdoors in Scandinavian style.

Meditation &mindfulness

Meditation is a popular lifestyle trend, with many people praising the practice as an important part of their daily routine. Paying more attention to the present moment and to thoughts and feelings helps improve mental well-being and allows people to enjoy life and understand themselves better.

Meditating in nature – away from the stress of everyday life – can be a healthier and more effective way to disconnect. Sit quietly in a secluded spot in the park or forest, take the time to listen to your surroundings and just be with your thoughts.

Outdoor yoga

Yoga is a popular form of exercise, focusing on breathing techniques, stretching, flexibility and mindfulness. It can help reduce stress and anxiety, fight depression, and even reduce migraines. Yoga can also be enjoyed outdoors – why not try an early morning yoga session in your garden, or head to a park with your yoga mat? Make sure you warm up first and then stretch well.

Breathing techniques are an important part of yoga. Try to relax and focus on your breathing.

Powerwalking

Powerwalking is very popular in Sweden and an ideal way to increase your heart rate and the number of steps. Walking briskly every day can help you build stamina, burn calories and make your heart healthier. Increase your walking speed to 3 mph for 10 minutes, then walk at a normal walking pace for five minutes, alternating between the two. A brisk 30 minute walk burns between 100 and 175 calories and can be as effective as swimming for the same duration.

Forest bathing

Forest bathing originated in Japan, but the evidence behind the benefits of forest bathing continues to grow and is very popular in Scandinavia. Time spent under the canopy of trees offers the opportunity to slow down, connect with nature and escape the pressures of everyday life. Use all five senses to connect with your surroundings and feel present in the moment. Doing this relieves stress and anxiety, can help promote sleep and also strengthen the immune system.

Four Midsummer in Swedish style

A weekend full of singing, dancing and eating – who doesn't love that? Be inspired by Sweden's most beloved annual festival, Midsommar, and make it happen in the park or in your garden. Try making your own flower wreaths and enjoy lunch or picnic. Be sure to try Swedish delicacies:open sandwiches on rye bread, elderflower syrup, baby potatoes with chives and sour cream dip, pickled herring and schnapps. You quickly feel in the Midsummer atmosphere.

Tips for home

Bring nature into your home and enjoy the outdoors. Grow seeds on windowsills and add plants and greenery to any room. Plant care is a form of self-care because when we take care of plants, we take care of ourselves. Try to bring natural elements into your home by decorating with natural materials such as wood, shells, bark, flowers and feathers. You can create a sitting area close to nature, with a view of the trees or the sky, and eat meals in the garden, on the balcony or by an open window to feel closer to nature.
