Viewing Distance and Resolution: Key to Perfect Photo Prints

Today, let's explore photo printing techniques.

When printing a standard photo for an album, it measures 15 cm by 10 cm at 300 DPI—the industry standard. You'll typically view it from about 25 cm away.

This matches the format from most cameras (not smartphone photos).

Resolution for Images and Wall Decor

For wall decor, it's different. Large Jumbo Size prints are viewed from farther away, allowing lower resolution.

What is resolution? It's measured in DPI (Dots Per Inch), the number of pixels (tiny dots forming the image) per inch (2.54 cm).

Here's an example: a 15 cm by 10 cm image at 300 DPI.

This crisp image prints beautifully on photo paper, perfect for framing on your desk.

But scaling it to giant size—like 4 meters by 2.70 meters for wallpapers or panoramic posters—reveals low resolution up close.

Pixels become visible. It's not ideal... unless viewed from afar, say 10 meters. (Not feasible in most living rooms!)

For large-format printing, start with a high-resolution, high-pixel image. Once printed and hung, view it from about 2 meters for optimal clarity.

Street billboards at 4m x 3m often use low resolution, as they're seen from great distances. (Best not for home use, though.)
