Living room layout and distance from TV

I am really looking forward to the move and renovation that is coming. However, there are also a number of things that I can already worry about, such as the layout of the living room and the viewing distance to the TV. I'll tell you why.

Completely different layout of the living room

Our new house, I'm really looking forward to it. Did I already say that 😉 ? Perhaps you recognize that, that you can completely immerse yourself in it. I have that at the moment. Partly because the house we bought is in a very cool place and it is really huge. Super fun to renovate and redecorate, but also a brain teaser when it comes to planning work and, for example, the layout of the living room.

Let me first say, the living room is spacious enough. That's not the problem. But the living room is really completely different in layout than our current living room. Some things fit just right, but there's one thing that bothers me a bit, and that's the corner sofa and the distance from the TV. I wonder if this isn't all too close together.

In our current living room layout, our corner sofa is on one side of the room, and the (colossal) TV on the other side against the wall, 6 meters away. Which TV you have suddenly turns out to be quite decisive for the interior. In our new living room the layout is as shown on the floor plan below.

As you can see, this living room is more of the 'doorzon' type. Our current corner sofa can't help but at the front of the house, near the two window frames. The long side of the sofa (2.90 m) will then be placed on the wide side under the window frame and the short side (1.60) of the corner sofa will then be at the front.

What do you think? Since the piece at the front is 4.41 meters wide until the recess, the distance to the wall where the TV will be hung is approximately 4 meters wide. And that is also the viewing distance from the corner sofa to the TV. And that seems far too little for a TV of 176 cm! Hubby and the kids don't think it's an issue at all (of course), but I have the feeling that the layout of the living room is too small for this. Or am I wrong?

Viewing distance TV according to consumer association

Do you look at screens a lot? Then protect your eyes. Provide good lighting so that the television is not the only light source. And pay attention to the viewing distance from the TV! According to the table of the TV viewing distance of the Consumers' Association, the distance is approximately large enough. Although our TV is larger than 65 inches, 4 meters should still be about sufficient as a TV distance from the corner sofa. Now it does not matter whether you are talking about corner sofas or regular sofas, the distance remains the same. I just think it's all going to get a little clunky in terms of decor. That is why I was looking for some inspiration for a new industrial TV furniture that is not so clumsy a while back.

Doubt about sofa due to living room layout

In addition to the viewing distance from the TV to the couch, I also have some doubts about our current couch in the layout of our new living room. Our current sofa is quite 'clunky' because it is low to the ground. Great for our current living room, but because the layout of our new living room is different, I think it looks quite full. Perhaps a regular sofa would even be better than a corner sofa.

Corner sofa out and regular sofa in?

Another issue that I'm concerned with and that the rest of my family doesn't care about 😉 . Maybe I would rather have the corner sofa out, but I can never get through that. And I get it too. I don't just look at the comfort, but also at how I think it looks and therefore at the layout of the living room. Frank and the kids only think of the wonderful hanging space that our corner sofa has. The children are already dreaming about endless relaxation and eating in front of the TV… Admittedly, such a chaise longue is also the pinnacle of lazing around.

Perhaps it would be better to look at a corner sofa model where the sofa stands more on legs, such as the above sofa from Pronto wonen. Because of the legs, this sofa looks slightly more airy than the sofa we have now. This might fit better with our new living room layout. And another advantage… our robot vacuum cleaner can go under it 😉 . The sofa from above is completely to my taste, but preferably in a different color. I think the camel color or cognac color that you see nowadays is so beautiful, see below.

What would you do with the layout of our new living room? Will your television be given a prominent place or would you rather hide your TV? And whether or not a corner sofa and then a sofa on legs, or do you think it doesn't matter? If you want to know what our sofa looks like now, read this blog about the gas fireplace or the wood stove, there is also a photo in it.

I'm curious!
