Optimizing Living Room Layout: Ideal TV Viewing Distance and Sofa Choices

I'm thrilled about our upcoming move and renovation. Yet, details like the living room layout and TV viewing distance are already on my mind. Here's why.

Table of Contents

A Completely Different Living Room Layout

Our new home has me completely immersed in planning. It's in a fantastic location and generously sized, making renovation exciting yet challenging—especially the living room layout.

The space is ample, but the layout differs significantly from our current one. While most elements fit, the corner sofa and TV distance concern me—they feel too close.

In our present setup, the corner sofa sits on one side, with our massive TV 6 meters away on the opposite wall. TV size truly impacts interior design. In the new space, see the floor plan below.

New Home Living Room Layout

This 'doorzon' (through-room) style living room positions the corner sofa near the front windows. The 2.90m long side aligns under the wide window, and the 1.60m short side faces forward.

What do you think? With 4.41 meters to the recess, the TV wall is about 4 meters away—matching the viewing distance from the sofa. For our 176cm (69-inch) TV, it seems tight. My husband and kids dismiss it, but I worry the room feels cramped. Am I overthinking?

Recommended TV Viewing Distances

Frequent screen viewers: protect your eyes with good lighting and proper distance. The Consumers' Association provides this expert table for safe viewing:

Distance from Sofa to TVScreen Size
250 cm40–50 inch
300 cm43–55 inch
350 cm48–65 inch
400 cm55–65+ inch

Our TV exceeds 65 inches, but 4 meters aligns with guidelines. Sofa type doesn't affect distance. Still, it might look bulky, so I've eyed sleek industrial TV stands for inspiration.

Sofa Doubts in the New Living Room Layout

Beyond distance, our low-slung corner sofa feels heavy in this layout. A straight sofa might suit better.

Swap Corner Sofa for a Straight One?

Family loves the lounging space; kids dream of TV snacks on the chaise. I prioritize aesthetics and flow. A legged corner sofa, like Pronto Wonen's models, would appear airier—perfect for our robot vacuum too. I'd choose camel or cognac upholstery for warmth.

How would you arrange it? Prominent TV or hidden? Legged sofa or no matter? See our current sofa in my gas fireplace vs. wood stove blog.
