Expert Guide: How to Plant Fall Bulbs for Stunning Spring Blooms

Question from a gardener: How do I plant fall bulbs?

Spring-flowering bulbs should be planted in fall, before winter arrives. Proper soil preparation is key: ensure it's loose and enriched with fertilizer.

Till the soil to a depth of 20 cm, incorporating compost. For a lush display, plant bulbs close together—spacing them at about twice the bulb's diameter. A practical tip: lay them out touching each other, then remove every other bulb.

Planting Depth

Refer to the depth for the bottom of the bulb (not the tip). These guidelines come from The Gardener's Guide "Bulbs", Könemann, 1998, London:

  • Cyclamen: 2.5 cm
  • Anemone, Buttercup, Crocus, Freesia: 5 cm
  • Gladiolus, Snowdrop, Squill: 10 cm
  • Narcissi, Daffodils, Sternbergia: 12.5 cm
  • Tulips, Hyacinths, Dahlias, Arum: 15 cm
  • Lily: 20 cm

Pair bulbs with other herbaceous plants for striking effects. Opt for biennials like sweet carnations or primroses, ground-cover perennials, or even dwarf shrubs.

Success depends on consistent watering, except during frost. A dry winter can shorten your spring bloom.
