Last spring, with invaluable guidance from my landscape architect friend, I completely redesigned my garden into a stunning Japanese style. The results have exceeded my expectations, creating a true oasis of peace.
While I always cherished my vibrant flower beds each summer, I'd long dreamed of a more sophisticated, contemporary garden. After saving diligently and securing the budget, I launched this project with professional help from a trusted landscaper. For reliable garden inspiration, I turn to Binette & Jardin, my go-to resource for plant info and ideas.
Choosing the style was challenging amid endless options like a decorative vegetable garden—blending edibles with aesthetics—or a space-efficient checkerboard layout ideal for urban plots. We even considered Mediterranean vibes, but with ample space available, a Japanese garden emerged as the perfect fit.
From the outset, I envisioned a garden that delights the senses while fostering deep relaxation and harmony. A Japanese garden delivers exactly that through thoughtful landscaping.
We began by laying stone paths using traditional 'Ishi' flat stones, arranged in pairs to form authentic Japanese steps. Natural elements dominate: black, white, or gray gravel; lush moss carpets; large pebbles; and coarse sand—all inviting communion with nature.
Water features are essential, so we incorporated serene fish ponds and gentle fountains. For plants, we selected Asian natives like bamboo, ferns, hyacinths, dwarf conifers, and chrysanthemums. Stone and paper lanterns add elegant accents throughout.
