As a smart home enthusiast who's integrated Nest devices like thermostats and smoke detectors into my own setup, I know the excitement of automation—and the hesitation of committing to hardware sight unseen. Imagine testing IFTTT recipes with Nest products without spending a dime upfront.
This year, after loving my Nest Thermostat's weather-based temperature controls via IFTTT, I bought a Nest Protect to expand my automations. I was underwhelmed by its limited IFTTT options and wished I'd tested integrations first. Turns out, you can—with the Nest Home Simulator Chrome app [No Longer Available].
This tool, designed for developers building Nest-compatible apps, simulates Nest APIs (Application Programming Interfaces). Learn more about APIs here. It lets programmers test interactions—like smoke detection or temperature changes—without real hardware.

For everyday users like us, it's perfect for experimenting with IFTTT recipes before purchasing Nest gear. Pretty ingenious, right?
Setup is straightforward but requires a Nest Developer account (using the same email as your Nest Home Simulator) to bypass the initial 'blocked' message.
Install the Chrome app; it appears in your apps list.

Launch it to see an empty default setup. Add virtual devices from the right panel.

Rename and label them realistically, like my 'Upstairs Bedroom Thermostat.'

I added a Nest Protect and Nest Cam too—curious about their IFTTT potential.

Log into Nest.com (same email), and your virtual devices sync seamlessly.

Now, dive into IFTTT testing!
Create a free IFTTT account if needed. Check our IFTTT guide.
Connect the Nest channel using your synced account.

Search 'Nest' in IFTTT to browse integrations for your virtual devices.

Triggers and actions now work with other smart devices.
First recipe: Email alerts if my virtual bedroom Nest Thermostat exceeds 80°F.
Your devices appear in dropdowns.

Set threshold and Gmail action for current temp notifications.

In the simulator, crank the virtual room to 94°F.

Email arrived promptly!

Second: Virtual Nest Cam motion sets bedroom thermostat to 75°F.
Trigger via 'New Motion Event.'

Activate motion in simulator.

Thermostat adjusted automatically!

This scratches the surface. Test any IFTTT combo, or even Zapier zaps. Explore multi-step Zaps.
Virtual testing saves money on mismatched hardware. Play before you pay!
