Imagine powering an entire home for life with a wind turbine that costs less than a new iPhone. That's the breakthrough from two brothers in India at Avant Garde Innovations.

This compact turbine generates 3 to 5 kW of electricity daily—enough for household needs—without environmental harm.

In Kerala, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan supports a controversial hydroelectric project near Athirapilly Falls to address the state's energy crisis. Environmentalists warn it could devastate the ecosystem, including Kerala's largest waterfalls.

Despite near-universal grid coverage in Kerala, millions across India still lack electricity. Avant Garde Innovations offers a sustainable alternative.

Wind Power: A Sustainable Solution to India's Energy Challenges

Brothers Arun and Anoop George from Kerala founded Avant Garde Innovations in 2015 to tackle energy poverty. Their ceiling-fan-sized turbine produces up to 5 kW daily for a one-time cost of just €665.

The company states: “Our goal is to eliminate energy poverty, reduce dependence on outdated grids, and foster self-sufficiency through affordable, locally produced renewables. This small wind turbine suits residential, commercial, agricultural, and village electrification needs. Market launch was planned for 2016.”

India, the world's 6th largest energy consumer (3.4% of global use), struggles with costly grid extensions to remote areas. Traditional 1 kW turbines cost €4,000–9,000; Avant Garde's is under €665, with prices set to drop at scale, per Arun George in Times of India.

A Successful Pilot and Growing Recognition

The first unit was installed in a Thiruvananthapuram church early that year. Scalable from 300 kW networks upward, it promotes decentralized renewable energy.

"We aim to deliver innovative, sustainable solutions for all, advancing self-sufficiency via widespread networks," the company says.

Avant Garde ranks in India's Top 20 Green Tech Innovations and Top 10 Clean Energy Companies, part of a UN-backed $1B+ initiative. India holds 4th globally in wind capacity (per Global Wind Energy Council), behind China, the US, and Germany.

This innovation could preserve Athirapilly Falls while powering homes sustainably.
