Creating Cohesive Home Decor: Unifying Your Space with Black Accessories

A few months ago, I shared my love for black home accessories in a previous post. They're incredibly versatile and stylish, effortlessly tying together spaces. Our home features a palette of white, gray, and natural tones, accented by black elements like accessories, our piano, and steel doors. I'm even contemplating adding a black accent wall—more on that soon.

Creating Unity with Black Accessories as a Bold Statement

Early on, achieving cohesion in our home was challenging after transitioning from a different style, especially before renovating the living room and kitchen. But progress has been steady. Post-renovation, our sleek living room and kitchen now boast steel beams. Incorporating oak wood alongside white and black accessories has beautifully unified the space.

It evolves bit by bit. Black accessories needn't break the bank—I've restyled existing vases to mimic high-end wholesale pieces. Previously stored away because their colors no longer matched, I revived them by spraying matte black lacquer, transforming them into fresh staples.

Spray Existing Accessories Black: Thrift Stores and Wholesalers Are Goldmines

It's surprisingly simple! After my first vase, I gained confidence and scoured a thrift store for a bottle, vase, and striking candlestick—all for mere euros. Sprayed black, they now rival premium wholesale finds, giving me ample options for styling.

Affordable DIY: Spraying Accessories in Black or Any Color

Color choice is flexible—black or otherwise—but proper technique is key. I source aerosol cans from Action (Spectrum brand) for budget-friendly results. Skip brush-and-paint; aerosols deliver a flawless finish unattainable otherwise.

Prep by grabbing these three aerosols:

  • Aerosol primer
  • Black lacquer aerosol (or your chosen color)
  • Clear finish aerosol

First, clean thoroughly to remove grease—use soapy water or glass cleaner like Monastery Pride. Spray primer outdoors on newspaper-covered surfaces in thin layers; multiple light coats prevent drips.

Once dry, apply the lacquer in several thin layers for even coverage without the old color bleeding through. I opted for matte black for its modern appeal, but options abound.

Finish with clear coat for durability.

My Revamped Accessories

I've transformed vases and a candlestick so far, with plans for more after a wholesaler visit—perhaps earth tones to complement our natural palette. What do you think of these black updates?

A greenish glass bottle from outdoors got the same treatment and now shines under the canopy. The shape was perfect; the spray fixed everything!
