As of March 8, 2015, smoke detectors became mandatory in all French homes to enhance fire safety. While this law prioritizes protection, fraudsters are exploiting it. Imposters dressed as firefighters knock on doors, falsely claiming to represent the local town hall or government services.
How do they operate?
They arrive unannounced, pretending to inspect water and gas systems. Spotting no smoke detector, they cite the legal requirement and insist they are authorized by the town hall, insurer, HLM office, or property trustee.
The Cost of the Scam
Scammers charge 100€ or more for detectors identical to those sold for 20€ in stores. They even push unnecessary maintenance contracts—simple battery changes are all that's needed.
Who Should Install the Smoke Detector?
Install it yourself at your home's entrance; one unit suffices. Tenants: your landlord foots the bill. Owners: buy an NF-certified model from a trusted retailer for guaranteed quality.
