Even without a green thumb, following these fundamentals ensures your houseplants thrive. Light is crucial—without it, they can't survive. Position them near an east-facing window for ample indirect light; most tolerate it better than harsh direct sun. Houseplants handle warmer indoor temps well, but keep them away from heaters. Counter dry air by misting leaves regularly or placing pots on saucers with damp clay pebbles. Water sparingly—plants recover from dry spells better than overwatering, which can prove fatal.
If leaves dwindle in number or size, repot promptly. Choose a pot 2 to 3 centimeters wider than the old one, add clay pebbles at the bottom for drainage, then fresh soil. Repot after winter if possible. Fertilize during spring and summer, sticking to manufacturer doses. Dust leaves regularly—especially on yucca, dracaena, or ficus—as it blocks light absorption and hinders growth.
