When should trees be planted? How to do ?

If you are planning to completely redevelop your garden, you are no doubt dreaming of a magnificent green space rich in harmoniously arranged trees and shrubs? Unfortunately, not being a professional gardener, you may not know how to proceed; in this case, read our tips below.

When is the best time to plant trees?

Even if planting and sowing are among your favorite gardening activities, remember that for trees, this step is very important. Indeed, its growth will depend above all on the good progress of its plantation. This is all the more the case for fruit trees, especially if you want to pick the fruits of your apple tree, or even your lemon tree, later. To do this, some rules will have to be observed. So to put the odds on your side, respect the planting periods.

And the ideal season is autumn, especially from Sainte Catherine in November until March, if the ground is not too frozen. The reason ? By favoring this time of year, you give the roots the opportunity to develop well and anchor themselves in the ground. And if for some reason you couldn't schedule this in the fall, you can always catch up in the spring when the ground begins to thaw and warm up.

A few tips

The first step is choosing the location. This question must be carefully considered, especially if it is a large tree. But already, for security reasons, places in the immediate vicinity of places of residence are not recommended. This will prevent branches from falling in the event of strong winds and bad weather, when the tree is large. Now, regarding the planting, the hole dug must be both wide and deep.

Mix the soil obtained with compost and an amendment to fertilize it, such as compost, marine guano, dried blood or crushed horn. Besides, it is necessary to line the bottom of the dug hole with gravel and small pebbles. These materials will have the function of draining and aerating the roots. Otherwise, a day before planting the tree, soak its roots in a mixture of water, cow dung (if you have it!) and clay. This operation is commonly called praline. In addition, also provide a solid stake. Finally, when installing the tree, please do not bury the grafting points.
