Police Officers' Moving Allowance: Eligibility, Conditions, and Compensation Guide

Police Officers Moving Allowance: Eligibility, Conditions, and Compensation Guide

As with many public servants, police officers qualify for a moving allowance when relocating due to an official transfer. Employers often cover all or part of these relocation costs, providing essential financial support during transitions.

Whether you're a national police officer, gendarme, or CRS member, you may claim this benefit under specific conditions. The allowance amount is calculated based on furniture volume, distance traveled, and household size. Here's a detailed breakdown backed by official guidelines.

What Is the Moving Allowance for Police Officers?

Police officers or contract agents reassigned to a new municipality can request a moving allowance. This flat-rate payment also applies when moving within the same city to occupy or vacate employer-provided housing.

Covered expenses include furniture transport for the officer and family members (spouse, PACS partner, cohabitant, or children). Coverage can be full or partial, ensuring smooth family relocations.

Key Conditions for Receiving the Moving Allowance

To qualify, you must meet several criteria: be in active service; ensure your spouse's, PACS partner's, or cohabitant's employer isn't covering the costs; and have served at least 5 years in your prior administrative residence if self-requested (or 3 years for your first transfer request). These residency requirements are waived for transfers bringing you closer to your spouse or PACS partner.

Family members' travel and furniture costs are reimbursable if the partner's monthly gross income is under 1,447.98 euros, or the couple's combined income is under 5,067.94 euros gross per month.

Compensation Amounts and Claim Process

The allowance varies by distance in kilometers, furniture volume, and household members. For instance, officers moving with a spouse and children receive higher amounts than single early-career professionals.

This tax-exempt benefit (free from CSG and CRDS) can be paid up to 3 months before the move. Always compare quotes from moving companies to secure the best value and most comprehensive service.
