The Amazon Echo is at the heart of modern smart homes, enabling seamless voice control for lights, music, and more. While its capabilities are vast, wake word options were previously limited to "Alexa," "Echo," and "Amazon." That's changed—Amazon has introduced "Computer" as a thrilling fourth option.
Star Trek fans will delight in summoning their assistant just like on the show. To switch your wake word, open the Alexa app on your iPhone or Android device. Tap the menu (slider icon on the left), then select Settings. Under Alexa devices, choose your Echo device.
Scroll to Wake Word, select from the four options, and wait a few minutes for the change to apply. Say "Computer" to activate your Echo. If the option isn't visible, ensure your app is updated—you may need to wait a day or two for the rollout.
Just don't expect warp speed responses yet—though Alexa handles plenty else remarkably well. New to Echo? Compare the full-sized Amazon Echo, compact Echo Dot, and portable Tap to find your fit. Key differences include size, price, and built-in speakers.
