How to Make Free Voice Calls to Anyone with Your Amazon Echo and Alexa

As a smart home expert with years of hands-on experience with Amazon Echo devices, I've seen how Alexa's voice calling feature transforms everyday communication. This update enables free voice calls between anyone with Alexa access—whether via Echo speakers or the Alexa app on Android or iOS devices.

To set it up, first update your Alexa app through the Google Play Store or App Store. You'll spot the refreshed app icon. Open it, log back into your Amazon account, add your name if missing (for caller ID), grant contacts access, and verify your mobile number.

Navigate to the new Messages tab in the app to manage contacts and messages. Ensure the contact's phone number matches what's linked to their Amazon account.

To place a call, simply say Alexa, call Mark. Incoming calls trigger a green ring on your Echo and ring your phone. Pick up with Alexa, answer the call.

Prefer messaging? Say Alexa, message Mom and dictate your note. The recipient gets a chime and green ring, then plays it back with Alexa, play my messages.

This feature works seamlessly on Echo and Echo Dot (not Echo Tap), as long as the other party has an Echo or the Alexa app. No need for the app when your Echo handles calls effortlessly.
