Nest Protect stands out as one of the most advanced smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on the market today. At a premium $130 price, is it truly worth it? As a tech reviewer with years of experience testing home safety devices, I've put it through its paces to find out.
Nest Labs, co-founded by former Apple engineers, first gained acclaim in 2011 with the Learning Thermostat—a smart device that adapts to your habits for energy efficiency. The Nest Protect is their second innovation: a Wi-Fi-enabled smoke and CO alarm designed to eliminate common frustrations in home protection. Choose from battery-powered or wired versions in black or white. We're reviewing the white battery model, which we also gave away at the end of this article.
Note: Since this review's publication, Nest Protect sales were paused due to a potential issue where the Nest Wave feature might silence a real alarm. A Wi-Fi update disabled this feature on all units, including the giveaway winner's.
The Nest Protect goes beyond basic detection with a motion-activated nightlight, gesture-based hush, and remote phone notifications—keeping you informed even when away. Its closest rival, Kidde's $30 smoke and CO alarm (two of which I have installed at home), shares only the talking alarm alongside the siren.
The Nest Protect arrives in eco-friendly recycled cardboard packaging, similar to the Fairphone (see our Fairphone Review and Giveaway). Beneath a sturdy plastic cover lies the mounting plate and premium screws—far superior to standard hardware store options.
It includes six AA batteries rated for up to 5 years, with a yellow glow warning when low.
Attaching the unit to the mounting plate is intuitive—it clips and twists effortlessly, avoiding the ceiling disasters I've faced with older alarms.
Setup is straightforward: Download the Nest app for iOS (Android version no longer available), scan the QR code, connect to the device's Wi-Fi, then link to your home network. Clear prompts guide you every step.
Fundamentally, it's a smoke and CO alarm—and it excels reliably. Unlike finicky gadgets, failure here isn't an option, and it doesn't disappoint.
It shines in user experience: Hush false alarms (like from burnt bacon) with a simple hand wave—no battery removal required. An early "Heads-Up" warning lights yellow and speaks softly for rising but non-critical levels.
Assign locations like "upstairs hallway" or "living room" from a preset list. Multiple units announce specific spots during alerts. Wi-Fi sends phone push notifications, with a 911 call option (US-only).
After daily use, its standout feature is peace of mind. Traditional alarms are set-it-and-forget-it until they chirp annoyingly or get disabled. Nest Protect self-tests nightly, glowing green to confirm readiness—reassuring, especially with family at home.
The motion-sensing nightlight is a nice touch: soft white glow for dark hallways, though limited in range. It just feels thoughtful, like a vigilant companion.
Without a Nest Thermostat, I can't fully compare ecosystems, but Nest humanizes mundane safety. Post-Google acquisition, it's a smart home staple.
