It's remarkable how quickly Amazon Echo has evolved since its debut less than three years ago. Powered by Alexa, this voice-controlled assistant continues to expand with new features and over 20,000 skills ranging from practical tools to fun novelties.
As Echo devices grow in popularity, households often need to support multiple users. Fortunately, Amazon provides two powerful solutions: Alexa Voice Profiles and Household Profiles. These features deliver tailored experiences, from personalized music recommendations to targeted calls. Here's our expert guide based on hands-on testing with Echo devices.
Echo Dot (2nd Gen) - Smart Speaker with Alexa - Black Buy Now on Amazon $24.99
Alexa Voice Profiles let each Echo device recognize individual voices, unlocking personalized responses. This works on Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Show, and more.
To set up your first profile, open the Alexa app, go to Settings from the side menu, then select Your Voice. Choose your training device.

Speak 10 phrases clearly into your Echo during training—Amazon advises a quiet room, normal speaking distance, and muting other devices. Training completes in 15-20 minutes. Test with "Alexa, who am I?" to confirm recognition and linked Amazon account.
To delete a profile (stored securely in the cloud), go to Your Voice and select Forget Voice—ideal if recognition issues persist.
For additional profiles, the new user can use the app: sign in with their Amazon account (or switch accounts via Settings), select I am someone else, enter a name, and complete voice training. Household Profile users can also add voices seamlessly. Over time, recognition improves with regular use.
Voice Profiles shine in everyday scenarios:
Calling & Messaging: Say "Alexa, play my messages," "Alexa, send a message," or "Alexa, call Mom"—it routes correctly without specifying contacts. Outbound calls announce your name.

Music: Link your Amazon Music Unlimited or Spotify account for personalized playback with "Alexa, play music" or "Alexa, play my station."
News: Get your custom briefings, skipping heard stories.
Shopping: Voice confirmation codes are unnecessary—purchases are tied to your voice for secure, hands-free ordering.
Household Profiles allow multiple adults with their own Amazon accounts to share an Echo. Enjoy shared music via Family Library, personal news/traffic, and account management.

With the person present, go to Settings > Account Settings > Household Profile in the app. They enter their Amazon credentials. Shared credit cards enable purchases.
Switch with "Alexa, switch accounts." Check current user: "Alexa, what account is this?"
To remove: Settings > Account Settings > Amazon Household > [Name], then Remove or Exit. Removed users can't join another household for 180 days.
Alexa Voice Profiles and Household Profiles transform your Echo into a true multi-user smart hub, rivaling features on Google Home. We've tested these extensively in busy households—they make daily interactions seamless and personalized.
