How to Clean and Paint a Wicker Chair: Expert Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1

Clean the Chair

Start by vacuuming dust, loose dirt, and cobwebs. For crevices and cracks, trim an old paintbrush to leave about 1" of soft yet stiff bristles—perfect for detailed dusting. An air compressor works great for blowing out stubborn dust.

Use a wire brush and scraper to remove old paint and rust from solid wicker parts.

Next, wash with a damp sponge and liquid detergent, using plenty of foam. For mold, add 1 cup bleach to the water. Wear latex gloves to avoid splinters. Rinse with a spray bottle of clean water—never soak, or drying will take forever before repairs.

Once dry, inspect for damage. Fix loose rattan with hot glue or carpenter's glue.

Spray Paint the Chair

With prep complete, paint using spray paint or an electric sprayer. Indoors is best to dodge dust and bugs, but ventilate well or go outside. Opt for enamel paint suited for wicker (check labels). Hold 8-10" away, sweeping back and forth for even coats.

Indoors? Wear a respirator—fumes are potent.

Let cure 48 hours before sitting to avoid stretching paint.
