DIY Lace Wedding Garter and Elegant Shoe Accents: Expert Step-by-Step Guide
Lace Garter
Materials and Tools
- Two 24" pieces of 1" or 1-1/2" wide blue satin ribbon
- One 24" piece of 1" white lace
- One 24" piece of 3" white lace
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Measuring tape
- Scissors
- 1/4" wide elastic
- Elastic guide or safety pin
Directions:
- Cut the lace and ribbon into 24" lengths, suitable for the average thigh. For larger legs, use 30" pieces.
- Place the edge of the 3" lace along one edge of a blue ribbon piece, right side of lace facing up and wrong side of ribbon up. Overlap by 1/4". Sew the lace to the ribbon.
- Sew the 1" lace along the other edge of the ribbon, right side of lace up and wrong side of ribbon up.
- Place the second ribbon piece on top, wrong sides together, and sew it in place.
- Double-wrap the elastic by sewing down the center of the ribbons. Imperfect stitching is fine as it won't show once gathered.
- Thread a 12" piece of elastic through one casing using a guide or safety pin (angle the end for ease). Secure both ends. Repeat for the second casing.
- Fold the garter in half, right sides together. Test fit, then stitch the ends securely with zigzag stitch. If lace catches, tape the ends. Trim excess and turn right side out.
Shoe Accents
Materials and Tools
- 8" to 10" piece of 1" wide lace
- String
- Sewing machine
- Needle and thread
- Small hanging pearls
- Silk charmeuse fabric
- Fabric glue
- Small silk roses
- Shoe clips
Directions:
- Cut an 8" to 10" piece of 1" wide lace and matching string. Lay string along one edge and zigzag stitch over it along the length.
- Pull the string to gather lace into a circle. Tie and trim ends.
- Hand-sew a 6" pearl strand onto the circle center, forming three loops.
- For a silk rose, cut 4" x 1-1/2" charmeuse, taper to oval. Fold lengthwise, roll into rose, and secure with needle and thread.
- Glue silk rose to lace center. Or use pre-made roses: insert stems from back, twist wires, attach shoe clip or have cobbler glue to shoes.
