Advent calendars date back to the early 19th century as a cherished German tradition, often featuring daily scenes, Bible verses, or chocolates. This year, DIY expert Melissa Caughey reimagines the classic with a modern, minimalist twist: a sparkling winter village that glows under starry nights. Created from simple paper crafts, this 24-day countdown brings hygge-inspired holiday magic to life.

Begin with white paper. Draw the house sides using two 1.5-inch squares, followed by two squares with a 2-inch roof pitch. Add an extra 1/3-inch tab at the end for hot glue attachment.

Craft 14 houses total. Cut red paper rectangles to cover the roofs and glue securely.
Fold the roof in half first. Working upside down, glue one side to the house top, hold briefly to set, then repeat on the other side. Flip upright for a perfect fit.

Use a snowflake hole punch on white paper scraps to create mini snowflakes. Punch and attach them to the house roofs for a frosty effect.

Trace tree shapes onto two shades of dark green paper using the provided pattern. Vary heights by trimming the rounded base edges.

Shape trees like paper airplanes. Punch snowflake holes before gluing the side panels together into a triangle, allowing light to shine through.

Make 10 trees total, then embellish the sides with white snowflake cutouts, just like the houses.

Number each house and tree from 1 to 24. Melissa alternated houses and trees, using a permanent silver marker for a sleek look.
