Metallic finishes for walls

Metallic finishes for walls

The first step in applying a metallic varnish to a wall is to paint the wall with a base coat of interior latex paint in a color that complements the enamel. Silver, copper, and gold metallic enamels applied over an ivory base coat give it a veined, shallow look.

A base coat close to the color of metallic polish will complement it. A rich color is obtained when a metallic silver polish is applied over a gray base coat. A reddish-brown undercoat works well with a copper metallic polish, and a dark mustard basecoat brings out the color in a metallic gold polish finish.

It is difficult to apply metallic finish paints without streaking. Do it yourself will get better results when using metallic polishes in small areas as accent colors. To varnish a large area, apply the varnish with a spray gun or hire a professional to do the job.
