Craft a Personalized Memory Stepping Stone for Your Garden

Materials and Tools:

  • 10" garden drip pan
  • Old spoon
  • Mixing bucket
  • Quikrete sand mix
  • 1 small screen piece, slightly smaller than the drip pan
  • Craft wood stick
  • Water
  • Work gloves (optional)
  • Petroleum jelly
  • Embellishments: marbles, pebbles/stones, shells, beads, flat marbles/gems, small mosaics, beach glass, stained glass, special keepsakes

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Work in an area with a protected surface where the stone can remain undisturbed for 3 days.
  2. Apply a generous layer of petroleum jelly to the sides and bottom of the drip pan before placing it on your work surface.
  3. Mix 5 parts Quikrete sand mix with 1 part water until it reaches the consistency of cookie dough. Adjust with more water or mix as needed.
  4. Fill the mold halfway with the mixture and smooth the surface. Place the mesh screen inside, then fill to the top. Gently tap the pan's exterior to release air bubbles and level the top. For imprints like writing, footprints, or handprints, let it set 30 minutes to 2 hours first—timing varies with humidity.
  5. Add decorative embellishments up to 2 hours after filling. If you make a mistake, remove items, smooth with a craft stick or spoon, tap the sides, and reapply.
  6. Allow the stone to cure undisturbed for 2-3 days. Once fully dry, gently remove it from the mold.
