Struggling to keep the kids entertained? I've got the perfect solution from my years of hands-on crafting with family.
On weekends, ditch the screen time and build this simple, strategic Awalé game together. As a parent who's made dozens of these, I can confirm it's ready in under 5 minutes—far better than buying one!
This African classic brings families together for rainy-day laughs and friendly competition.

- 1 cardboard 12-egg carton
- 2 x 35 cm strips of 0.5 cm wide flat elastic (like panty elastic)
- 2 large beads (wooden or plastic)
- Acrylic paint (your favorite colors)
- 1 brush
- 1 sharp pencil
- 1 tube of universal glue
- 48 dried beans (or fava beans, chickpeas, marbles, etc.)
1. Mark the middle of the egg carton's width and draw a light pencil line along its full length.
2. Cut the lid straight down the middle from end to end with scissors.
3. Glue one half of the lid along the opposite side of the box for symmetry, matching the attached side—as shown in the photo.

4. Paint the box in your chosen color.
5. Thread a bead onto each elastic strip. Fold in half and pass one into the 2nd cone and one into the 4th cone (at the tips) from inside the box (use scissors tip, needle, or pencil). Tie ends securely under the box.
These elastics let you close the box by stretching them over the top. The beads keep them in place when opening. It's functional and stylish! Skip if you're eager to play.
Place 4 beans (or marbles) in each cell and start playing!

The half-lids serve as spaces to lay down captured pieces during play. Fold them down to store, securing with elastics.
Slide beads on top or leave underneath—your call. Varnish for extra durability.
Awalé boards average €20 each.
