There's nothing quite like a crisp garden salad featuring homegrown cucumbers. I also enjoy infusing water with cucumber slices for a refreshing drink or garnishing martinis with thin slices.
Cucumbers are remarkably easy to cultivate. Plant them directly in the ground or in pots with trellising or fence support.

1. Position cucumber plants in a warm, sunny spot with afternoon shade for optimal growth.
2. Space plants 1 m apart, with 1.20 to 1.50 m between rows.
3. Enrich soil with compost and well-rotted manure at planting. Reapply once tendrils and first flowers appear.
4. Yellowing leaves signal a need for more nitrogen—boost with appropriate fertilizer.
5. Train cucumbers on a trellis for easier harvesting and better airflow.
6. Water 1-2 times weekly to keep soil evenly moist; increase frequency for sandy soils.
7. Protect against cucumber beetles, which cause wilting, using row covers. Remove covers at flowering to allow pollinators access.
8. Aim for soil pH between 6.0 and 7.0.
9. Regular harvesting encourages prolonged production.
10. Harvest by cutting stems 5mm above the fruit with a knife or pruners.

Harvest timing by variety:
- Long market green: 15-20 cm
- English long green: 30 cm
- Chinese long green: 50 cm
- Pickle varieties: 2-4 cm
For bitter cucumbers, trim the stem end where bitterness concentrates.
