DIY Christmas Ornaments: Craft Modern Balls in Just 15 Minutes

Classic glass Christmas baubles feel outdated—fragile and lacking originality. Today, we're embracing playful, modern DIY alternatives made with simple colored cardstock.

As a BAFA animator during summers, I've made DIY a core part of my lifestyle. There's immense pride in creating everything yourself, especially for the holidays. My Christmas decorations are 100% homemade and budget-friendly—you can make 10 stunning balls in just 15 minutes!

Materials

Sheets of colored cardstock (choose hues to suit your style), 10 toothpicks, modeling clay, thread, scissors.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Cut 5 strips of 1cm x 10cm from a sheet of cardstock (I used red Canson paper). Stack them on top of each other.

2. Pierce the stacked strips at one end with a toothpick, then pierce the opposite ends with the toothpick's other tip.

3. Tie a pre-looped thread to one end of the toothpick. Secure with small balls of modeling clay at each end to hold the strips in place.

4. Fan out and space the strips to form a beautiful, modern Christmas ball!

The first one takes the most time, but once you're in rhythm, prep 50 strips at once and assemble each in under 90 seconds. Personalize with rhinestones, stickers, markers, beads, or your creative flair!

Savings Breakdown

A pack of basic Christmas baubles costs €10+ for a generic look. One A2 Canson sheet is €1, plus €1 for 100 toothpicks—yielding 100 balls for just €2! Unbeatable value.
