As a seasoned crafter with years of upcycling projects under my belt, I love turning forgotten fabrics into holiday treasures. If you have ribbon and yarn on hand, this project costs nothing extra—just grab an old sweater and basic sewing skills.

Create a custom pattern for your ideal stocking shape. Draw it on brown craft paper or a paper bag, then cut it out.
Turn the sweater inside out and lay it flat, aligning the bottom edge straight. Center the pattern on the sweater with the foot toward the collar. Position it low enough so the sweater's bottom can fold up as the cuff. Trace around it with a fabric marker.

Remove the pattern and pin the sweater layers together to prevent shifting while sewing.

Starting at one side of the sweater bottom (now the stocking top), sew all the way around following your traced line. Leave the top open and backstitch at the start and end for durability.

Cut away the excess fabric, leaving a 3/4" seam allowance for strength.

Turn the stocking right side out and fold the top down like a cuff. Sew a ribbon loop to the inside seam for easy hanging.

Your handmade, upcycled Christmas stocking is complete—festive, eco-friendly, and full of charm.
