Turn an Old Sarong into a Stylish Tunic: My Zero-Cost DIY Guide

Turn an Old Sarong into a Stylish Tunic: My Zero-Cost DIY Guide

Sarongs are perfect for summer beach days, but they often end up stored away until next year. As a fan of sustainable fashion with limited sewing skills, I discovered a simple way to transform one into a chic, fluid tunic you can wear anytime.

The idea struck while organizing my closet—I loved the fabric of this sarong and hated waiting for July to wear it over my swimsuit. Even though I'm no expert seamstress, this project is straightforward, and the results are stunning. My daughter tried it too, using one of her own sarongs!

Materials Needed:

  • 1 sarong (pareo)
  • 1 pair of scissors
  • 1 needle
  • Thread (matching the fabric color)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Fold the sarong in half.
  2. On the folded side, in the middle, cut an isosceles triangle opening about 25 cm wide.
  3. Sew the sides from the bottom up, leaving about 20 cm openings for the arms at the top (near the neckline).

That's it! Slip on your new poncho-style tunic—wear it next to the skin or over a thin-strap tank top. For a polished finish, experienced sewers can add contrasting satin bias around the neckline.
