Installing a Majestic Scottish Highlander Wall Mural: My DIY Experience and Pro Tips

I've dreamed for years of adorning a wall with a stunning Scottish Highlander photo wallpaper. Our old home lacked the space, and its textured spachtelputz walls made installation impossible without major replastering—which I wasn't keen on.

When we decided to move, ideas flooded my mind, and they haven't stopped. Our new home offers endless possibilities, but the Scottish Highlander mural stayed top of my list. Now, it's proudly in place.

This first renovation project marks a milestone. The space isn't fully finished, but my new 40 m² office—converted from an old barn—is coming together beautifully.

Though I initially envisioned the Highlander in our kitchen, the delays there made me pivot. Thankfully, my office has an ideal wall, saving me from painting decisions. 😉

Selecting the Photo Wallpaper

Finding the right image was challenging, but Nikkel Art's selection was perfect. Their online tool let me customize the size and positioning precisely. The door on the wall required adjustments—Karel (our Highlander's name) has one horn peeking next door and the other rounding the corner—but the result exceeds expectations.

Choosing the Right Type of Photo Wallpaper

Next came material selection. I hadn't wallpapered in 25 years, so jumping into photo wallpaper was ambitious. 😉 Nikkel Art offers regular non-woven, Eco Premium non-woven, vinyl, and self-adhesive options. Self-adhesive tempted me, but with 1.12 m wide, heavy strips, I'm glad I skipped it—misplacement could've been disastrous.

I chose Eco Premium for its heavy-metal-free formula and scratch resistance, ideal for our home. Vinyl is even tougher (tear-resistant), and I'd pick it next time for extra durability.

Hanging It Together Without Arguing

My partner Frank was excited, though I hid my nerves about potential mishaps. Last weekend, we tackled it—and it was a workout.

It's doable solo for pros, but teamwork is key for alignment. Start on a straight wall without doors; ours overlapped the frame, complicating cuts and lacking clear edges.

Precise strip matching ensures seamless Highlander continuity—impossible alone without expertise.

The Best Wallpaper Paste for Non-Woven Photo Wallpaper

Nikkel Art included Perfax Roll-on Magic paste—a smart touch. Mix powder with water, stir out lumps (mine weren't perfect, but fixable on the wall). Apply to the wall, not the paper—far easier.

The pink paste turns clear when dry, showing coverage. Use a block brush for even application, then follow instructions. Initially anxious about paste quantity, plumb lines, cuts, and fit, my confidence grew as we progressed.

Expert Tips for DIY Photo Wallpaper Installation

Whether it's a Scottish Highlander or another design, here are my battle-tested tips:

  1. Use quality tools. My sharp box cutter worked, but the hard plastic spatula warped thin strips. Opt for metal—never plastic—for straight cuts.
  2. Designate one 'lead' person; the other assists. Avoids arguments. 😉
  3. New to wallpapering? Pick a simple, straight wall first.
  4. Work methodically, one strip at a time, for calm execution.
  5. Ignore dark spots under light paper—they vanish as it dries.
  6. Non-woven allows butt-jointed strips—no overlap needed for flawless seams.

We invested a few hours, but the payoff is immense. I'm thrilled and eager for more. It transforms a room instantly—I highly recommend it.
