Iowa State Study: Homeowners More Dissatisfied If Their House is Smaller Than Neighbors'

Research from Iowa State University reveals that your satisfaction with your home hinges not just on its features, but on how it stacks up against your neighbors'—especially in size. Homeowners in smaller homes compared to those nearby are significantly more likely to feel dissatisfied, highlighting our innate drive for relative standing in the neighborhood.

The study examined data from over 1,000 homes and their 10 nearest neighbors to gauge satisfaction levels. Unlike typical housing datasets that focus solely on units or occupants, this analysis bridges both. Results show residents of the smallest home on their block are, on average, 5% more likely to report dissatisfaction than those in the largest.

“I focused on size because it's straightforward to measure and compare,” explained the Iowa State researcher. “If size matters, other attributes likely do too—like the age of the home or outdated architecture—though they're harder to quantify.”
